Day 15 (28.07.17) Friday

The first thing Pemmy said when she woke up at 6am, ‘Mummy, I want my daddy.’ Before LOA left for home, Pemmy would always insist that he must bathe her. So, this morning she insisted I bathe her. While bathing her she kept saying, daddy doesn’t do this or daddy does it this way. I told her to better calm down, there is daddy’s style and there is mummy’s style. ‘Don’t give me headache o, young lady. You should have followed him when he was leaving. It would have made our life easier.’ The only problem would have been that once she gets to Lagos, she would start crying for her mummy and Nimmy every single day.

After I dropped Nimmy at school, I joined Wendy’s mum and Nayo for the early morning chit chat at the coffee shop. Nayo took us to where she buys sausage and bread for breakfast. She visits the shop whenever she brings her daughter to Peto each summer. Wendy’s mum has been bringing her daughter for nineteen years while Nayo for more than ten years too; they are known faces in Budapest at summer.

Nayo asked me to try the big orange looking sausage and bread. I didn’t like it but Pemmy helped her to finish it. Really, how do you tell a three-year-old kid not to eat with anyone that is not their parent? Just say it right? What if it doesn’t work?

I said no to Nayo giving her from her breakfast but Nayo insisted that Pemmy was her breakfast partner. Pemmy finished the meal and looked around the shop for what to drink, ‘mummy I want Fanta.’

As if she meant to say, ‘don’t you think I need to drink something after eating?’

The sausage shop also sells fresh meat. One of the favorite meat in Hungary and Europe generally is Pork. The last time LOA and I went shopping, I bought pork instead of beef. Well, it was Peace that pointed out the fact because I just knew the beef tasted funny but it wasn’t bad. Pork is called sertéshús
while beef is called marhahus.

We left the shop and walked to the usual meeting place for the mums at the center; the coffee shop at the mall. The coffee shop was in a mall just within the indoor market. Here vendors sell things ranging from fruits and vegetables. Different fruits that I had only seen in children’s story books. I also saw different colours of honey; from clear colour to dark brown. I asked the man the reason for the different colours, I had never seen a clear colored honey in my entire life. He said it’s caused mainly by the type of nectar from the flower the honey is collected. Amazing!

I knew I had to buy meat, fruits and vegetable but I didn’t come along with my shopping bag. You see almost everyone in Budapest carries a shopping bag when you are going shopping. No one gives you a nylon for free after you make purchases. Apart from that I couldn’t buy meat in the morning and carry it around till afternoon after Nimmy’s session.

When I got back to Nimmy’s group in school, it was costumes day. The children tried putting on and off different costumes. Nimmy was shown different costumes; she would tell the conductor showing her the costume the colour of the costume. People are always amazed that she knows a lot of colours. She was asked which costume she wanted to put on; she kept saying no ( to each costume she was shown) until she saw a sailor’s hat and an apron? Madam, what profession is that? Make up your mind. Abi it is sea chef?! My amazing little lady, Pemmy couldn’t be left behind, she tried on a few costumes too and they all had fun.

After I dropped my peeps in the hotel later in the day I came back to the indoor market. It was a long train journey but like I said, I had a ticket for my entire stay I could go practically anywhere without a bother.

Beef is a bit expensive, while Pork and chicken are cheap. The most expensive is fish. I wonder why? I searched for Mackerel and when I finally got, the size of the fish would qualify as jara (bonus) in a typical Lagos market. It was expensive, four tiny pieces cost 2000 forints.

Well Nimmy needs to eat Mackerel because it’s rich in Omega 3, which is good for the brain. After cooking the fish, the difference was clear. This obviously came fresh from the river without any chemical or preservatives. The fish didn’t travel for several days on the high sea; It tasted really nice.

I bought roasted pork, boy! It tasted like bush meat. I sure hope to get some down to Naija. I hope it will keep.
